Supported Independent Living (SIL)

Supported Independent Living (SIL)

Refers to a type of accommodation and support services for individuals with disabilities, mental health conditions, or other complex needs who want to live independently in the community. SIL aims to provide individuals with the support they need to live as independently as possible, while also promoting their social inclusion and community participation.

SIL can be provided in a variety of settings, including apartments, shared housing, or individual homes. The level of support provided can vary depending on the individual's needs, ranging from occasional support to 24/7 support. The support provided in SIL can include assistance with daily living tasks, such as personal care, meal preparation, and housekeeping. Individuals may also receive support to manage their finances, access healthcare services, and participate in social and recreational activities.

The goal of SIL is to help individuals build their skills, confidence, and independence so they can transition to living completely independently in the community. SIL is designed to be flexible and tailored to meet the unique needs and preferences of each individual. Support can be adjusted over time as needs change or as individuals achieve their goals.

Individuals in SIL may work with a team of support workers, including personal care assistants, occupational therapists, and behavioural specialists, who work together to provide holistic support.

SIL also involves training and coaching to help individuals develop the skills they need to live independently, such as budgeting, meal planning, and time management. Through SIL, individuals can achieve greater independence, social connections, and community participation, leading to improved quality of life and well-being.
